How to Beat the Blues? Tip #3: What If Everything is Going to Be OK?
For anyone who’s been feeling stressed — from world events or just struggling with all the gray days here in the middle of winter — this might be helpful:
I’ve been feeling really stressed out — waking up super early in a panic. Today I was thinking about all the things I could change — like maybe I’d feel better if I lived in California again or if I had a super high-profile job again. I was thinking about things I could change outside of myself. And then I had an insight, as though from a wise woman within: I could change everything and maybe I’d feel better for a little bit, and yet true change comes from within. All the world could be in chaos and the only place where I can truly find peace is within myself — to be still in the eye of the storm. Peace begins with me.
This evening I read an article that recommended looking at things from different perspectives, and then a perspective I’d heard from a wise teacher came to me and made perfect sense: What if everything is perfect just as it is right now? What if I’m doing great just as I am right now? What if everything’s going to be ok? What if there is nothing to worry about, because everything is happening exactly as it’s supposed to be? And what if it’s totally ok to just relax? To go with the flow and enjoy the ride? What if I don’t need to do more, be more or have more than this moment right now?
I breathed this in and felt every knot in me come untied. I’ve heard that the Truth feels light. This feels light and true to me. I hope it’s helpful to you too. 🌟❤🌟
How to Beat the Blues – Tip #2: The Feel Better List
It’s very common to focus on what is lacking . Ever have a job evaluation and spend 90% of the meeting talking about a few things you could do better? Or have 90% of your day go smoothly and then ruminate on one or two things that didn’t go well? This lack type of a focus creates suffering. Add that to a lack of sunlight and exercise in the winter and you can end up feeling pretty crappy.
Today’s tip for beating the winter blues is one I got from a friend. It’s super simple and highly effective. He said he and his wife have an agreement: when one of them is upset about something or they get in an argument, they will get in each other’s face and say, “go write down 10 things you’re grateful for;” and typically that really shifts the energy and de-escalates the tension and stress.
Perspective Check. Focusing on what we’re grateful for helps us think straight, regain perspective and gets us into a more positive mindspace where we recognize the many things that are actually going quite well in our lives. In fact, Stanford psychiatrist and professor Dr. David Burns asserts that focusing on shortcomings and ignoring positives – what he refers to as a “mental filter” – is just a form of distorted thinking that leads to feelings like anxiety and depression and leads to relationship problems.
How we feel is directly linked to what we think. “The idea is that when you’re feeling upset, you’re often involved in a mental con, but you don’t realize it,” Dr. Burns writes. “You’re telling yourself things about yourself and the world that aren’t really true. And when you change the way you think you can change the way you feel.” [Read more…]
How to Beat the Blues – Tip #1: Something to Look Forward To
I love my birthday — March 21st! It’s the first day of spring (well, except when the first day is March 20th). Either way, spring is my end-all-be-all favorite season. And the days up to it are often a struggle for many people, myself included. Gray, cold days mean less sunshine and oftentimes less exercise — things that help lift one’s spirits — so it can be easy to feel down and sluggish this time of year.
And yet, there are simple things we can do to beat the winter blues, so to help us make our way to the brighter, cheerier weather of spring, I will share a series of tips from now until spring to remind us of what we can do to feel better despite the winter weather (by the way, these tips are a preview to what you’ll find in the mental health app I’m creating).
Tip #1
For many of us, it can make you just want to hibernate knowing it will be dark by the time you get out of work during the winter or perhaps you’re feeling stir crazy from being inside a lot. A great way to make it through is to give yourself something to look forward to. It can be something as simple as knowing you’ll make a mug of salted caramel hot chocolate when you get home or having an awesome plan to take a hot eucalyptus bubble bath before bed. If you find yourself feeling down, focus on what you can look forward to. What would perk up your spirits knowing it’s on the horizon? [Read more…]
How to Recover from the Holiday Rush and Look and Feel Good in the New Year
After all the holiday indulgences – eating all those things we normally don’t eat – and being super busy and getting less sleep than usual through the holiday season, I shared some tips for how to look and feel good into the new year today on Fox2 News.
Look Well-Rested and Radiant. First I recommended some easy cheats to look well-rested and radiant with makeup.
1. Choose makeup that doubles as skin care to keep skin looking and feeling supple despite the winter cold. I recommend:
- Josie Maran Surreal Skin Argan Finishing Balm – an innovative new product that seals in the benefits of the skincare you apply for ongoing hydration, hydrates the skin and primes skin for flawless makeup application ($36, josiemarancosmetics.com)
- Josie Maran Matchmaker Serum Foundation – this amazing foundation evens out skin and brightens the complexion, giving a dewy, luminescent glow that looks very natural. It’s also good for the skin, made with 100% pure argan oil to hydrate and balance skin ($42)
- Josie Maran Creamy Concealer – This ultra-hydrating concealer is infused with argan oil. It’s super blendable and erases dark undereye circles without caking or creasing($20)
2. Choose makeup that adds radiance. I recommend:
- Josie Maran Luminizer – It mimics the look of healthy skin. It also hydrates skin with argan oil. Mix it with any foundation or moisturizer to give skin a glow that looks lit from within ($26)
- Josie Maran Luminizing Powder Veil – Don’t dull your skin by topping it with matte powder. Opt for a light-reflecting powder that looks natural and gives you a lit-from-within glow like Powder Veil, a hydrating powder that won’t dry out skin or cake. It has micro-fine multi-color pearl to illuminate skin ($30)
Beauty From the Inside Out. Next I shared some tips to help you look beautiful from the inside out, because what we put in our bodies is reflected in our largest organ – our skin. [Read more…]
